[Short Trip, May in Seattle] Lake Crescent, Olympic National Park

  • Distance and Travel Time (from downtown Seattle): 102 miles (2h 48m)
  • Trip Type: Day trip or Overnight trip
  • Parking
Parking lot at the Storm King Ranger Station or near the Moments in Time Trailhead close to Lake Crescent Lodge
  • When to Go
May to Oct (the lake area is accessible year long but other parts of Olympic National Park may not be in winter seasons)
  • Things to Do
Ferry ride, stroll along the trails along the lake, throw stones in the water from the rocky shore, see Marymere Falls, etc.
  • Tips
    1) The ferry departs every hour but weekends can get crowded and you may have to wait more than an hour so it is best to go early.
    2) If the kiddos need a short break, stop at Port Gamble (which is a good place to take a break slightly past Kingston) and visit the General Store & Cafe and stroll through the little town.
    3) If your family is not used to spending long hours in the car, spending a night in Port Angeles is a good option.
    4) The Pacific Coast and Rain Forests is a bit too far away for a day trip so plan on several days if you want to explore the whole park.
    5) The Moments in Time Trail is an easy self-guided 0.6 mile loop trail with lake access that goes through the forest. Kids will enjoy throwing stones into the water at the shore while adults can enjoy splendid views of the lake. On the other half of the trail, the whole family can explore how a mossy northwest forest looks like. Park at the trailhead near Lake Crescent Lodge for easiest access to this trail.
    6) If the Lake Crescent area is the only place on your agenda for the day, you can also stroll along the one mile long (one way) Marymere Falls Trail to see the waterfall. Parking at Storm King Ranger Station is closer to this trail.
