[Short Trip, May in Seattle] Sol Duc Falls, Olympic National Park

  • Distance and Travel Time (from downtown Seattle) : 124 miles (3h 24m)
  • Trip Type: Day trip or Overnight trip
  • Parking
Parking lot at the Sol Duc Falls Trailhead at the end of the road in Sol Duc Valley
  • When to Go
May to Oct (best to go during the season when the Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort is open – usually spring to autumn depending on yearly weather conditions; be sure to check the weather and road conditions beforehand in winter seasons)
  • Things to Do
Ferry ride, stroll along the one-mile long trail to the Sol Duc Falls, enjoy the walk through the forest, cross small footbridges, etc.
  • Tips
    1) The ferry departs every hour but weekends can get crowded and you may have to wait more than an hour so it is best to go early.
    2) If the kiddos need a short break, stop at Port Gamble (which is a good place to take a break slightly past Kingston) and visit the General Store & Cafe and stroll through the little town.
    3) If your family is not used to spending long hours in the car, spending a night in Port Angeles is a good option.
    4) The Pacific Coast and Rain Forests is a bit too far away for a day trip so plan on several days if you want to explore the whole park.
    5) Prepare waterproof clothing or raincoats (rainboots are also good) to stay dry on wet days. Also be sure to take along some extra clothes and shoes so everyone can change and be more comfortable after the hike.
